WHAT (on earth) ARE WATERCOLOR WEAVINGS?

While most people are familiar with traditional watercolor painting, few know anything about this technique, which I backed into some 20 plus years ago. On this page I begin to explain the process, which continues in the biographical section. Perhaps the best way to appreciate its novelty is to view the VIDEO below and look at GALLERY 1, which is devoted exclusively to watercolor weavings. For those who would like to explore this technique, click on WORKSHOPS for a detailed step-by-step description.

I love the effect of movement possible with a weaving.  Watercolor as a medium can be static and bland; I have always enjoyed its opposite facets of spontaneity and drama. Weavings, a collage of criss-crossed elements, create a kind of energy, as line and shape travel either together or in counterpoint across a painted surface.  The three-dimensional quality of the interlaced image also possesses a power not attainable with conventional painting.  For me, the technique heightens the impact of land and waterscapes, where wind, sea and sky are primal forces. To learn more, check out Workshops, which has a detailed description of the process.

Like all artists, I enjoy variety. The weavings require great intensity of effort, so I often turn to more straightforward painting for a more relaxed experience. The GALLERIES in the menu above offer a diverse sampling.
