ASIA These are small works completed during and after a stay in the mid 90's with my brother and sister-in-law in Hong Kong.

I spent several weeks doing on-site ink sketching, followed by time in my studio to complete some representational and, later, more imaginative works. Shown here are a sampling of my impressions of Hong Kong and southern China (principally the Guilin region).

They are not priced, but if someone is interested in purchasing any, please get in touch wth me at nancy@nmaas.com.

Below: a sampling of street sketches of Hong Kong, in black ink on white drawing paper. These include the famous Man Mo temple. Ordinarily they are each fully matted, but their small size made them easier to temporarily bundle and photograph as you see here.

An illustrated article in AMERICAN ARTIST, "Asian Inspiration" explains the motivation behind this work (December 1998).

With an upcoming trip back to Hong Kong and other Asian destinations, I'll be photographing and sketching once more.

CORNELL UNIVERSITY

My husband has taught at Cornell for well over 40 years, continuing to instruct the largest class in the world, Psychology 101. I taught African Art at Cornell for a number of years as well. Our fates have been inextricably linked to the Cornell environment. Every year we see new students and returning alums, many of whom have become friends. We know this place well, including its secrets!

From an aesthetic point of view Cornell is absolutely beautiful—from its natural setting on the eastern heights overlooking Lake Cayuga to its landscaped grounds and architecturally interesting building

Watercolor's Allure

Watercolor provides all the danger, surprise and excitement I could possibly want from a painting medium. Together, pigment and water dominate the painting process as they roll across a paper surface at breakneck speed. We artists must act quickly to staunch this duo's progress, attempting to carve purposeful images out of uniquely fluid and animate essence. I love watercolor's challenge for it requires constant dialogue. The medium and I impose our will on paper, hoping for a result that marries both our efforts.

Northern Michigan

How could any place be as breathtaking in summer as upstate New York?  Try northern Michigan in the “upper lower peninsula.”  My husband is originally from Detroit, so Michigan remains in his blood. My first university teaching job was at Wayne State University in Detroit. Once introduced to the appeal of northern Michigan, its force becomes irresistible -- aquamarine waters, sugary sands, pine and birch forests and gently rolling hills, not to mention the people who are extraordinarily friendly. I have painted here for many years, as we migrate to Charlevoix every summer for some rest and relaxation.  Until recently I participated in a well-known summer art fair in Charlevoix, painting up a storm of images of the local landscape. My work will be exhibited at Zazen Gallery, Charlevoix, again this summer--local landscapes and an occasional watercolor weaving.

Prague, Czech Republic

I sometimes feel that I don't have enough time to interpret all the amazing sites I've been lucky enough to see on this earth. Take, for instance, the city of Prague. It is an artist's dream. This view of the heroic architectural accomplishments of generations of builders (seen on the way to the ladies room!) impelled me to try my hand. More comments will be found if you click on the image itself.
