The Yoruba of Nigeria are distinctive in their celebration of twin births. For reasons not totally understood, they have an extremely high rate of twinning. Twins are considered especially powerful, given standard names depending on their birth order, and both they and their mother enjoy unique prerogatives. The twin concept is reflected in various aspects of their sculptural arts, most notably the famous ire ibeji figures used to house the souls of deceased twins.
